7 Golfing Facts That’ll Shock You
With an 18-hole golf course in our back yard, it’s no surprise we’re CRAZY about our golfing! We’ve found seven golfing facts that we think might shock you:
What’re the Odds
1 in 12,500. Those are your odds of hitting a hole-in-one – unless you’re a tour professional of course (their odds are substantially better at 1 in 2,500). However, what are the odds of someone hitting two hole-in-ones in a row? Kassandra Komma of Oakland University managed to hit TWO consecutive hole-in-ones on a 9-hole course – becoming one of only a handful of people who’ve managed the feat. So, your chances of hitting a double whammy like Kassandra did? Around 1 in 67 million.
Lots of Dimples
Like indentations found on the cheeks of blushing teenage girls the world over, little divots, otherwise known as ‘dimples’, can be found covering the surface of a standard golf ball. In fact, international golfing regulations state that there must be exactly 336 divots per ball. What are they for, though? Scientificamerica.com shares that these dimples actually create a film of air around the ball as it travels – aiding its flight and maximising distance.
The Long Shot
If you’ve ever played a round of mini golf (or putt-putt as us South Africans call it) you’ll understand how challenging it is to get a putt just right. Well, at the age off 66, Fergus Muir managed to hit the longest putt ever recorded. Back in 2001, the pro golfer hit a successful put from 375 feet away (over 110 metres) – proving that no matter your age, you can still do something absolutely astonishing!
Driving on the Moon
The beautiful sport of golf is challenging on earth, so imagine trying to play it in a space suite, with a huge pack attached to your back, on the MOON! That’s exactly what Alan Bartlett did during the Apollo moon landing mission back in 1967. He hit a golf ball off the surface of the moon, which flew into the moon’s low-gravity atmosphere and is probably confusing an alien race somewhere in the universe as you read this.
Scottish Jail Birdies
Imagine a sport that disrupts society so much, they decide to make playing it illegal! Well, in 1457, the Scottish parliament declared the playing of golf an illegal act – stating that it was interfering with residents’ military training. The Scottish love their golf like they love their fine ales – passionately! For this reason, the ban on golfing had to be repeated in 1471 and in 1491.

The Pre-Tees
A golf tee is a little plastic peg with a bowled surface that accommodates a golf ball atop it. It’s stuck into the ground, elevating the golf ball enough for a clean hit. However, plastic hasn’t been around in the golfing industry for that long. Before tees, golfers would have to carry sand along with them, using a handful or so to make a mound off of which they’d hit their balls.
